Karta gets a little wild with new sun bear mascot Sani

Karta Coconut Water is looking to carve out a more distinctive personality in the beverage category, using a new mascot and a series of playful brand activations to bring its “Naturally intense” positioning to life.

Developed with dentsu Malaysia, the campaign introduces Sani, an opinionated sun bear and self-assured coconut expert, as the brand's new mascot. Through the character, Karta challenges the idea that intensity must come from excess, instead associating it with simplicity, confidence and knowing what one wants.

Sani makes his debut in the campaign's launch film, bringing the brand's messaging to life through stories and humorous interactions. Rather than serving as a one-off campaign character, the sun bear is intended to give Karta a recognisable face that can anchor its storytelling beyond the current initiative.

The campaign also extends beyond film and digital storytelling through a series of physical activations. This includes a rodeo activation featuring 15 fully branded vehicles across the Klang Valley, accompanied by on-the-go product sampling to bring the campaign into consumers' everyday journeys.

Thompson Chuah, head of marketing, signature brands at Karta Marketing, said the character was created to reflect the brand's existing personality while giving it more room to connect with consumers.

“We fell for Sani immediately as he brings so much of the Karta spirit to ‘Naturally intense’, while giving us a character people can have fun with, grow fond of and hopefully come to recognise as unmistakably ours,” Chuah said.

For dentsu Malaysia, the campaign was built around the contrast between a world that constantly encourages consumers to want more and a brand that celebrates knowing when enough is enough.

Ellison Fernandez, executive creative officer at dentsu Malaysia, said Sani gives the brand a character that can open up further storytelling opportunities.

“The joy of this campaign has been in making it, and we can only imagine the adventures he will get us into next,” Fernandez said.

The campaign builds on Karta's previous efforts to establish a more distinctive voice in Malaysia's coconut water category. In May 2025, the brand rolled out its “So kaw-kaw-nut” campaign, which leaned into the Malaysian expression “kaw” to highlight the richness of its coconut water and differentiate itself through flavour-led messaging.

That campaign, developed by Muma Malaysia, marked Karta's first brand film on its YouTube channel, despite the brand having been present in the market since 1999. With “Naturally intense”, Karta is taking its brand-building efforts a step further by introducing a character-led approach that could give it more opportunities to develop an ongoing relationship with consumers.
