Whiskers N Paws teams up with CHOMP to reduce food waste

Whiskers N Paws has teamed up with CHOMP to sell near-expiry pet-foods and other perishable products via the app, aiming to reduce waste and boost sustainability efforts.

CHOMP launched in 2021 and is primarily known as a food-saving app – the majority of its 250 vendors are from the F&B sector and include cafes, restaurants, bakeries and stores, such as The Optimist, The Astor, Levain Bakery, and TreeHouse to name a few.

However, over the past four years, CHOMP has seen opportunities to expand its waste saving mission into homewares and has partnered with other types of businesses that sell perishable goods outside of food, such as flowers and skincare. The partnership with Whiskers N Paws has led to CHOMP adding a new Pet category to the app, according to the release.

As part of the partnership, two Whiskers N Paws retail locations in Ap Lei Chau and Lohas Park, will now be available via the CHOMP app. When pet-food, treats, supplements or other perishable items such as pet shampoos are nearing their "Best before date", these items will be made available for sale via the CHOMP app at a 50% discount off the regular price.

The aim of the partnership is to help reduce the amount of perfectly edible and usable items from ending up in landfill.

Sylvana Lee, head of marketing at Whiskers N Paws, said: “At Whiskers N Paws we are always striving for ways to innovate, be more sustainable and reach new customers - we feel that our new partnership with CHOMP helps us meet all three of those goals."

"Over the years, after conversations with our charity partners, we have realised that whilst donated goods are valuable, it’s financial support that makes a real impact for them, which is why we have our "Paws for good" programme that raises money for local animal charities. This has given us some paws-for-thought on what can be done with products that aren’t always needed by charities, but can bring joy to other pets in Hong Kong. We hope this partnership with CHOMP can bridge that gap," she added.

Carla Martinesi, founder and CEO of CHOMP, added: “We are delighted to welcome Whiskers N Paws to CHOMP. Like with human food, if pet food remains unsold, it often passes its best before date and ends up in landfill, contributing CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Through this partnership, we hope to see people embrace sustainable shopping for their pets, try new foods and products for their furry friends, and welcome animal lovers to our community of CHOMPIONS.”

This is not the first time CHOMP partners with local brands to promote food waste reduction. Back in September 2024, CHOMP teamed up with Kowloon Shangri-La to unveil a Buffet-Box – a solution designed to encourage the consumption of all food created at buffet-style restaurants.

The initiative targeted those living and working in the Tsim Sha Tsui neighbourhood, as well as anyone interested in being more sustainable about food consumption.

The sustainable initiative set out to demonstrate that there are innovative and consumer-friendly ways to ensure no crumb is left behind, whilst encouraging the public and businesses to take a stronger approach towards minimising food waste.
