SCMP redesigns print and digital for AI-first era

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) has introduced a new design across print and digital, elevating the way readers discover and engage with news in an AI-first, fast-moving world.

Putting readers at the centre, this intuitive and enriching experience across SCMP's print and digital platforms is designed for intellectual and influential readers who are driven to make informed decisions, offering them a premium and seamless journey from discovery to engagement.

This evolution builds on SCMP's readers' trust in the media for reliable information, while news consumption habits have shifted and the organisation is strategically transforming its narrative formats and elevating the user experience, according to Chow Chung Yan, editor-in-chief of SCMP.

SCMP acknowledged that readers today seek print for in-depth analysis, assessment and reflection, while digital platforms deliver instant updates. Since its first edition was published on 6 November 1903, the organisation has adapted to meet evolving reader needs while maintaining a focus on the future.

"By deepening our investigative reporting, expanding analytical coverage, and enhancing storytelling, the SCMP is transitioning its print product from high-volume daily news to a premium, magazine-style edition," Chow said.

SCMP is also integrating advanced AI capabilities to deliver a more seamless and visually sophisticated digital platform, with every initiative reinforcing its core commitment to ensuring that engagement with SCMP content remains consistently high-value, insightful and rewarding.

The SCMP has transformed its print edition into a premium product featuring thoughtfully curated editorial content, unique perspectives and visually rich layouts to support a deeper, more engaged reading experience.

The SCMP app and website now offer streamlined navigation for convenient, on-the-go access, as well as enriched multimedia formats such as photography, video and infographics for active reading. In addition, a new AI-enabled search feature allows readers to easily explore and research topics, making full use of the SCMP’s 123-year archive of reliable, trusted reporting.

In tandem with the launch of the revamped print edition, the retail price of the SCMP newspaper will be revised from HK$18 to HK$20, effective today (3 August).

Tammy Tam, publisher, South China Morning Post, said, “For 123 years, the South China Morning Post has been your most trusted source of news. Our fresh redesign isn’t just about a premium experience – it’s a renewed commitment to quality and innovation. The slight price adjustment enables us to deliver more in-depth analysis, explore important stories from new angles and introduce cutting-edge digital features for our readers.“

“We believe that these improvements by our professional and dedicated journalists are worth your appreciation and support, ensuring content that truly matters in a rapidly changing world. Your support is the greatest encouragement to us as we continue to raise the bar for in-depth, impactful journalism,” Tam added.

SCMP’s overhaul reflects a broader trend among Hong Kong publishers embracing AI tools and digital re-architecting to elevate user experience. Most recently, Chinese-language publication Ming Pao partnered with Cyberport and tech firm Forms to launch "Connovative Space." The initiative leverages generative AI to convert traditional written journalism into multi-format assets, including audio tracks, videos, animations, and digital books.

In April, English-language free daily The Standard (英文虎報) revamped its mobile app and desktop interface to streamline navigation and content discoverability.
