Nike and LEGO transform Shanghai school playground into modular sports space
share on
Nike and The LEGO Group have teamed up to redesign a Shanghai primary school playground into a modular sports space that integrates education, movement, and creative exploration.
This builds on the global multi-year partnership between Nike and LEGO, launching this summer, which combines sport and creativity to inspire children through immersive experiences and co-branded products.
As part of the project, LEGO China and the Nike Swoosh have teamed up with design firm OLA Shanghai to construct an innovative sports playground at Baoshan No. 2 Central Primary School in Shanghai (寶山第二中心小學).
The design combines elements of engineering and athletics, fully inspired by the fundamental shape of a 2×3 LEGO brick, according to online fashion outlet Hypebeast. Its aim is to encourage children to design their own climbing and play routes. The concept translates the brick's modularity into versatile structures for climbing, balancing, and exploration.
Insights from a LEGO “Build the change” workshop contributed to the project, highlighting the focus on open-ended interactions that allow children to turn breaks into opportunities for spontaneous physical activity and teamwork, according to the report.
Additionally, this project aligns with Nike’s “Move to zero” sustainability initiative, presenting the playground as both an educational resource and a versatile platform for exploration. This cross-industry collaboration transforms the space into a dynamic representation of how design can effectively connect the ideas of education, physical activity, and creative construction.
