How Kris Jenner became China's digital fortune symbol

Kris Jenner, the American television personality and the mastermind behind the Kardashian-Jenner empire, has become an unlikely viral sensation on Chinese social media, where she is being embraced as a symbol of wealth, career success and good fortune.

Across platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Weibo, users have adopted Jenner's image and related memes as a light-hearted way to manifest prosperity, using her likeness in profile pictures and posts to wish for better incomes and overall luck.

Jenner, best known for her role in the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, has built a multi-billion-pound empire spanning fashion, beauty, media and endorsements. She is widely regarded as the driving force behind the careers of her daughters Kim, Kourtney, Khloé, Kendall and Kylie.

It is this association with wealth and sharp business instincts that has led Chinese netizens to recast her as a kind of digital "god of wealth".

The trend gained wider attention when Marcelo Wang, a TikTok creator who teaches Mandarin phrases and slang, highlighted the phenomenon in a post. In response, Jenner commented on one of Wang's videos: "you're all doing amazing, sweetie!!!!" The line is a reference to a well-known quote from an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

What started as a simple avatar swap has evolved into a broader meme format in China's online communities. Users photoshop Jenner into various professional roles, dubbing her "Doctor Kris", "Lawyer Kris", "Programmer Kris" and "Boss Kris". Other versions show Jenner sipping bubble tea or placed in front of the Chinese flag, giving the meme a playful, localised touch.

Netizens have embraced the trend with enthusiasm, with many sharing their own creations and encouraging friends to join in. One user on Xiaohongshu tagged her friend to change their avatar, joking: "Hurry and change to this avatar with me, I can already earn RMB 10,000 every 20 minutes now."

Another summed up the sentiment simply: "I need her wealth luck."
