HKTB and Affordable Art Fair HK evoke spirit of nostalgia with Auntie Angel Store

The HKTB and Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong have joined forces this year to offer an interactive art experience, bringing in local artist Angel Hui Hoi-kiu to curate an Auntie Angel Store.

Featured in the just concluded four-day Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong 2025, the activation was inspired by Hong Kong’s traditional tuck shops, commonly known as “si6 do” (士多), and offered locals and visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the nostalgic wonder of these iconic shops, inspiring them to discover more of the distinctive and evocative charms of the local neighbourhoods.

Drawing inspiration from classic local snacks, Hui has skillfully recreated a range of snacks in exquisite blue and white ceramic, using traditional Chinese brushwork techniques.

As Hui noted, “Snacks come with an expiry date, but ceramics last. I love the contrast that arises from the fundamental differences between the two.” Through the use of blue and white ceramic, she hopes to preserve the flavours that hold a special place in the collective memory of Hong Kong, allowing a much-loved ingredient of the city’s community culture to endure.

Auntie Angel Store recreated the charm of vintage Hong Kong tuck shops with retro refrigerators, soda crates, bouncy ball dispensers, and capsule toy dispensers, evoking a spirit of joyful nostalgia.

14 classic local snacks and drinks were featured in the tuck shop, from vintage ice-cream cups and popsicles to bottled soy milk and soft drinks, allowing visitors to soak up authentic local flavours. With every purchase in the interactive area, visitors will receive a token for the capsule toy dispenser which will issue badges designed by the artist.

The three badge designs were inspired by classic local snacks and encapsulate the city’s nostalgic charm. Alternatively, the tokens could be used for a game on the classic bouncy ball dispenser for an opportunity to relive childhood delights.

Furthermore, the HKTB has set up a themed feature wall within the exhibition space showing the architecture, retro signage, and other elements of the city to inspire visitors to venture out and explore different districts of Hong Kong.

Before leaving the tuck shop, visitors could pen their thoughts on nostalgic snacks and si6 do1-themed postcards designed by Hui. The postcards feature a rich tapestry of Hong Kong’s culture and can be posted to friends and family members using a vintage tin postbox within the space.

Through Auntie Angel Store, the HKTB aims to promote Hong Kong’s unique cultural landscape, inspiring tourists to explore authentic neighborhoods that serve as cultural playgrounds after visiting the exhibition, giving them the opportunity to discover more about the city’s unparalleled charm.

Don't miss: HKTB taps Takuya Kimura's daughter Kōki to promote HK's cultural scene

Most recently, HKTB tapped Japanese rising star Kōki, the daughter of famed actor Takuya Kimura, to front a promotional video, highlighting the beauty and vibrancy of Hong Kong.

Titled “Kōki's journey through Hong Kong” (光希 Kōki 漫遊香港足跡), the video documents Kōki's footprints across Hong Kong, including a ride on the upper deck of an open-top tram, touring around Hong Kong island to witness the bustling street scenes.

Clad in a white shirt, she kicked off her journey to the iconic landmarks in Central and Sheung Wan. As the actress explored the exhibition in Tai Kwun and PMQ with a film camera, Kōki said that every corner of the city hides surprising inspiration, imagining herself as the characters in the paintings.
