HKJC reimagines history with ponies on parade at Tai Kwun

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is welcoming the Year of the Horse with real-life ponies, uniting the community through thrilling races, international equestrian spectacles, and a special series of cultural, sporting, and family events.

Running from 7 to 15 March, the campaign serves as both a community celebration and a tourist attraction, while also promoting equine and community sports development.

Following a start to the Lunar New Year—including the club's participation in the International Chinese New Year Night Parade, its exclusive sponsorship of the "Prosperity Gallops Across Hong Kong" fireworks display, and the Year of the Horse Raceday at Sha Tin—the celebrations continue with Ponies on Parade at Tai Kwun in March 2026.

This heart-warming campaign invites families, horse lovers, and city dwellers to experience a rare urban encounter with real-life Shetland ponies. Set against the historic Parade Ground at Tai Kwun—once part of the Central Police Station compound in the 1890s—the event offers a moment of connection, joy, and discovery that breaks through the barriers of city living.

Drawing inspiration from archival photographs showing horses on these very grounds more than a century ago, Ponies on Parade reimagines the Parade Ground as a space where visitors can once again experience the presence of horses. Seeing these gentle ponies against the backdrop of the Barrack Block not only offers a fascinating visual echo of a bygone era but also provides a rare opportunity to see, touch, and connect with real horses right in the heart of Central.

Through this initiative, HKJC and Tai Kwun aspire to contribute to a culturally vibrant Hong Kong, amplifying the city's role as a thriving arts and cultural hub in the region and on the global stage.

Most recently, HKJC sponsored the "Prosperity Gallops Across Hong Kong" fireworks display to celebrate the Lunar New Year, alongside a drone and fireworks show in Conghua, Guangzhou. Both spectacles form part of the Club's year-long campaign honouring the special role of horses and horse racing in the community.

In Hong Kong, the 23-minute fireworks extravaganza opened with vibrant bursts to welcome the Year of the Horse. The dazzling display featured horse-themed motifs and auspicious symbols, including horseshoes and "HKJC" and "WIN" designs lighting up the night sky. A total of 31,888 pyrotechnic shells were launched, illuminating Victoria Harbour in a powerful and majestic tribute to the galloping spirit of the year ahead.
