7-Eleven marks 45 years in Hong Kong with neon nostalgia

7-Eleven marks 45 years in Hong Kong with neon nostalgia

Riding on its 45th anniversary, 7-Eleven is tapping into Hong Kong nostalgia by transforming two themed stores with neon signage and classic minibus plates, turning them into new photo hotspots.

The 7-Eleven 45th anniversary Mong Kok themed store centres on neon, with every piece handcrafted by local neon artisan Master Wu Chi-kai. The signs weave together brand touchstones – “45th Anniversary,” “Open 24 Hours,” and “Your Neighbourhood Store” – with neighbourhood-specific details such as mahjong tiles, goldfish street motifs, and a key design referencing a nearby old-school locksmith, paired with the phrase “Achievement Unlocked” (成就解鎖).

The Tsuen Wan 45th anniversary themed store takes its cue from classic minibus plates, with Hong Kong’s last hand-lettering minibus plate craftsman, Master Mak Kam-sang, creating a series of plates in traditional red-and-blue calligraphy.

Instead of destinations, the plates showcase 7-Eleven staples – onigiri, Slurpee and stirred noodles – rendered in the same style as the city’s transit signage. A convex mirror mounted on the exterior wall nods to the surrounding car parks and doubles as a ready-made photo spot.

These stores embody what the brand says it truly values: the textures of everyday Hong Kong life, and a commitment to keeping them alive for the next generation.

This follows 7-Eleven's revival of Hong Kong's very first 7-Eleven store in Happy Valley, fondly known as the "little red house", bringing convenience and surprises to every corner of the city while staying as close as ever to the people within it.

Rather than telling its own story, 7-Eleven reflects the rhythms, language and shared moments of life in Hong Kong—the very things that have kept it relevant since 1981. In a category defined by convenience and proximity, the campaign positions 7-Eleven not just as a retail network, but as a brand embedded in the fabric of the city.

Beyond store design, 7-Eleven has also launched four 45th anniversary limited-edition products, each upgraded with 45% more of the main ingredient at no extra cost. The lineup features 7-SELECT wasabi octopus onigiri and 7-SELECT grilled pork soy sauce onigiri, alongside two bestsellers – 7-SELECT cheese bread and the  7-SELECT Japanese style steamed cake.
