Guardian will no longer be posting on X as it feels that the benefits of being on the platform are now outweighed by the negatives. Nonetheless, X users will still be able to share Guardian’s articles, and content from X can also be embedded into Guardian’s news.
In a statement published on their website, Guardian said, “We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X (formerly Twitter).”
It added that this was a decision being considered for some time, given the “often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism”.
“The US presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time: that X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse,” it added.
In response to the Guardian’s announcement, Musk called the platform “irrelevant”.
Meanwhile US President-elect Donald Trump named Musk and "American patriot" Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) together, according to Trump on social media platform Truth Social.
Musk said the move “will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people.”
"Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies - essential to the 'save America' movement," said Trump.
