Shopee's Sea rebrands SeaMoney to Monee

Sea Limited (Sea) has rebranded its digital financial services arm SeaMoney to Monee, marking a new chapter in its financial services push across Southeast Asia and beyond.

The rebrand, which also saw the unveiling of Monee’s new global headquarters in Singapore, is aimed at simplifying the brand name for easier use across markets while reinforcing Sea’s purpose of improving lives through technology in every area related to money.

Monee, which was launched in 2014 as SeaMoney, now offers a suite of financial products including mobile wallets, payment processing, credit, banking, and insurtech. The company currently serves users in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Brazil.

The new name also reflects the company’s ecosystem strategy, with Monee echoing Shopee in tone and reinforcing the connection between Sea’s commerce and financial services arms.

According to Sea, the brand’s evolution signals its growing role in the region’s digital economy. Monee has also established a digital banking group under MariBank, its licensed digital bank in Singapore, to further support financial inclusion and trusted banking services in Southeast Asia

"While Monee is already one of the largest digital financial services businesses in our region, I believe we are only seeing the start of its potential. As Southeast Asia's digital economy continues to grow, we remain committed to bettering the lives of consumers and small businesses through technology. Monee will continue to build a future where financial inclusion is a reality for all," said Forrest Li, chairman and CEO of Sea.

“The key economic and digital development agencies, such as Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), the Economic Development Board (EDB), and Enterprise Singapore (ESG) have created a thriving ecosystem for tech innovation here. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) saw digitalisation as an opportunity to make our financial services sector more vibrant. Our story of homegrown success and subsequent globalisation would not have been possible without the strong support and positive environment provided by our home country,” Li added.

Monee isn't the only brand to undergo a refresh in recent times.

In April this year, Mozilla revealed a new look to reinforce its focus on digital rights and innovation, moving beyond its longtime association with the Firefox browser. The organisation, a champion of an open internet for over two decades, said the update reflects its intent to reconnect with users and expand its influence.

Similarly, Razer Fintech, the financial technology arm of Razer Inc, together with its B2B payments unit, Razer Merchant Services (RMS) rebranded to Fiuu in March last year. The strategic move reflects the company's commitment to providing innovative payment solutions to merchants worldwide and to become a leading force in the future of digital payments. As part of the rebrand, Fiuu unveiled a new name, logo and identity.
