A fleet of 2,000 drones lit up the night sky over Seoul's Han River on Saturday for a high-profile light show ahead of the official Korean release of Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026.
Titled "2026 Hangang drone light show – Marvel Special," the performance brought fan-favourite comic book characters - including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Doctor Strange - to life using synchronised lighting, precise aerial formations, and music. The displays transformed familiar cinematic imagery into large-scale, three-dimensional visual spectacles above one of Seoul's premier public spaces.
The event was a joint collaboration between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and The Walt Disney Company Korea. It was organised as the finale of Seoul’s 2026 Han River Drone Light Show series.
The event featured a series of interactive ground activations alongside the drone display. Visitors explored a photo zone themed around Avengers: Doomsday (scheduled for release in South Korea on 16 December), a costume parade, event booths, and a farmers' market near Jayang Station on Seoul Metro Line 7 featuring discount promotions from Korea's top food delivery app, Baemin.
Although structured as a Marvel-themed cultural event, municipal officials have not confirmed whether the showcase operated as an official commercial partnership or advertising campaign.
Nevertheless, the spectacle highlights a growing trend across urban entertainment and out-of-home (OOH) media, where pop-culture intellectual property (IP), digital technology, and municipal public spaces intersect to drive audience engagement.
Originally launched by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in 2023 to develop the Han River into a key nighttime attraction, the drone series forms part of a broader tourism strategy targeting 30 million annual foreign visitors, an average stay of seven days, and a 70% revisit rate, according to The Korea Times.
The initiative continues to demonstrate strong economic impact for the city, with seven shows held this year through 9 October drawing roughly 197,000 spectators—averaging 28,000 viewers per show, up more than 2.5 times from the 2023 average of 11,000. Foreign nationals accounted for 34.6% of attendees across the first half of the year, while performance days saw card spending at nearby businesses increase by 39% overall and foreign visitor spending surge by 402%, said the report.
