Metro Broadcast has appointed Francis Ng (pictured) as head of digital and AI innovation, reporting to Karrie Lam, deputy CEO of Metro Broadcast.

In his new role, Ng will spearhead Metro’s digital and AI innovation, audience engagement, content distribution, and data-driven development across the company's channels and platforms.

This role was created as Metro Broadcast accelerates its digital transformation, said Ng. "Establishing the position of head of digital and AI innovation highlights the group’s strategic commitment to elevate our digital maturity and operational capabilities to the next level."

"Our company’s goal is to leverage generative AI and data insights to scale up our data-driven capabilities, broaden our audience reach beyond Hong Kong, and unlock new revenue opportunities in a fast-evolving media landscape," he added.

Prior to joining Metro, Ng served as head of Yahoo Homepage, news and partnership at Yahoo Hong Kong, where he led digital transformation initiatives spanning content strategy, audience development, strategic partnerships, and commercial growth. His extensive media experience and solid background in digital transformation will be valuable as Metro scales up Metro’s AI and data capabilities to support sustainable growth.

The appointment forms part of Metro Broadcast’s recent leadership restructuring. As part of this realignment, Karrie Lam was named deputy CEO, tasked with overseeing overall operations and strategic development while accelerating digital transformation and business innovation.

Ng’s appointment highlights a wider trend across Hong Kong’s media landscape, where legacy outlets are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to stay competitive.

For instance, the 67-year-old newspaper group Ming Pao recently launched "Connovative Space," an arts, culture, and creator ecosystem platform co-developed with Cyberport and mainland-listed technology firm Formont Information. Speaking at the launch event, Cyberport CEO Rocky Cheng emphasised that driving the cultural sector toward AI adoption, internationalisation, and sustainability requires a blend of premium content, technological capability, and forward-looking vision.

Similarly, the South China Morning Post recently unveiled a comprehensive redesign of both its print and digital platforms to align with changing reader habits in an AI-driven media environment, offering rapid digital updates alongside deeper context in print.
