McDonald’s SG embraces Japanese game show style for Samurai burger return

McDonald’s Singapore is turning the return of its 'Samurai burger' into a full-blown Japanese game show, inviting fans to put their speed, coordination and dignity to the test at Bugis Junction.

Running up until the end of August, "Samurai IKE!" marks McDonald’s Singapore’s first Samurai-themed game show activation. Located at the open area next to McDonald’s Bugis Junction, the experience features three challenges inspired by the over-the-top energy of Japanese variety shows.

Fans can take on "Samurai edition: Hole in the wall", where players must strike a pose and fit through a moving wall before it sweeps them away; "Fries and furious", which challenges participants to use giant chopsticks to stack fries into a bag against the clock; and "Kyoho grape drop", where players don a soft serve-inspired helmet and jump to pop grape balloons overhead.

The activation will also ramp up over two weekends, with participants able to compete as a "Solo Samurai" or team up with a friend for a chance to win cash prizes. Registrations will open through McDonald’s Singapore’s social channels, while visitors to the activation can also stand to score complimentary goodies.

The game show accompanies the return of McDonald’s 'Samurai burger' range, including the 'Samurai beef burger' and 'Samurai chicken burger'. Joining them are the new 'Tamago Samurai beef burger' and 'Tamago Samurai chicken burger', which add an egg to the respective teriyaki-coated patties.

The seasonal menu also includes returning 'Seaweed McShaker fries', alongside new 'Katsu chicken tenders', 'Kyoho grape soft serve' and 'Strawberry daifuku pie'.

The 'Samurai burger' has been a recurring seasonal fixture for McDonald’s Singapore, with the latest push taking the familiar menu comeback beyond the restaurant and into an experiential format designed around play, competition and Japanese pop culture.

The Samurai activation comes as McDonald’s Singapore continues to build its seasonal menu launches around culturally driven campaigns and collaborations. Most recently, McDonald’s Singapore teamed up with homegrown snack chain Old Chang Kee for a limited-time National Day menu celebrating Singapore’s love for curry.

Launched on 9 July, the collaboration featured the 'Curry potato chicken burger', 'Rendang curry beef burger' and 'Curry McShaker fries', with the latter using a curry seasoning blend developed with Old Chang Kee. Ahead of the launch, the brands teased the crossover on Instagram with an Old Chang Kee curry puff tucked inside a McDonald’s paper bag.
