Mattel unveils Monster High doll inspired by Filipino 'manananggal'

Mattel, the renowned Barbie maker, has expanded its Monster High collection by introducing Corazon Marikit, a doll inspired by the "manananggal"—a mythical creature from Philippine folklore. This release underscores the American toy manufacturer's commitment to embracing diverse cultural narratives within its product lines.

The "manananggal," a prominent figure in Filipino mythology, is depicted as a vampire-like, fetus-eating entity capable of severing its upper torso to take flight during the night. Corazon Marikit embodies this legend, featuring a detachable upper body and intricately embroidered bat wings.

Dressed in a "terno"-inspired pink and red ensemble, she accessorises with a rattan bag, an embroidered fan, and "bahay kubo"-inspired heels, seamlessly blending folklore with Filipino fashion elements.

In its website, Mattel said, "A feast of Filipino fashion and traditions, this 'manananggal' maven is said to be able to separate her top and bottom halves to fly into the night. A vision in foil print and fringe, along with beautifully embroidered batwings, Corazon Marikit saunters down a runway of jasmine, leaving her fangs screaming for more. She'll arrive in our most innovative, two-part packaging design yet."

As legend has it, the "manananggal" hunts sleeping villagers—especially pregnant women—using its long, thread-like tongue to drain their blood or devour their unborn children. To ward it off, people scatter garlic, salt, or ash on its severed lower half, preventing it from reattaching and ensuring its demise.

The doll's packaging enhances its display versatility. Collectors can manipulate levers to position Corazon Marikit in various dynamic poses, with the upper body designed to slide and the lower half capable of swinging and rotating.

This isn't Mattel's first venture into celebrating Filipino heritage. In 2024, the company released a Filipina Barbie designed by Filipino-American artist Carlyle Nuera, adorned with traditional "terno" sleeves and "janggay" jewellery.

Corazon Marikit is priced at US$75 and is available exclusively through Mattel's official website. This release not only enriches the Monster High series but also offers collectors a unique piece that honours and brings global attention to Filipino folklore.

The introduction of Corazon Marikit has garnered positive reactions from fans, particularly within the Filipino community, who appreciate the doll's cultural significance and detailed craftsmanship. This initiative reflects a growing trend in the toy industry towards inclusivity and representation, allowing children and collectors worldwide to engage with diverse cultural stories.

"Wait a minute—Monster High has a Filipino character named Corazon Marikit?! That's the most Filipino name I've ever heard!" one X user stated.

"Actual photos of Corazon Marikit are coming in and she's so maganda! The colours look so much more cohesive in person," another said.
