lululemon unrolls the yoga mat at Beijing’s iconic Great Wall

Lululemon has launched a signature yoga festival at the historic Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall in Beijing, welcoming thousands of community members for a day of movement, mindfulness, and connection.
Set against the majestic backdrop of one of the world's greatest wonders, the event celebrated the foundational practice of yoga - drawing parallels between the ancient bricks of the wall and the structural alignment of the human body.
Nestled in a century-old chestnut grove at the foot of the wall, the festival opened with a performance by the Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre. Led by principal dancer Hongji Chang, the company performed the Eight Trigrams Palm excerpt from the acclaimed dance-drama Wing Chun, offering a striking juxtaposition of contemporary dance and traditional Chinese martial arts.
As golden hour settled over the ancient ramparts, lululemon brand ambassador Yilong Zhu joined the HiiKo Drum Group atop the wall for a traditional Chinese drumming sequence. To the rhythm of the echoing beats, more than 200 yoga practitioners flowed through a specialised Tai Chi-infused yoga sequence designed by lululemon ambassador Min Lin.
Throughout the day, international and local lululemon ambassadors—including Ryan Leier, Ryan Mannix, and Mary Taylor—led 20 sessions ranging from Ashtanga and Vinyasa to singing bowl meditations, gong baths, and Gyrotonic-inspired movement. As night fell, the winding Water Great Wall was sequentially illuminated, creating a pulsing light display meant to mimic the rhythm of a deep breath.
Conscious of the site’s historical significance, all festival installations adhered to a strict “Minimal intervention, maximum respect” principle, utilising fully removable, zero-impact infrastructure. Volunteers from local Great Wall Conservation Stations were on hand to promote environmental stewardship, and lululemon made a formal donation to the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation to support preventive conservation projects in the Huairou District.
“lululemon is founded from yoga. Over the years, with every new store we have opened across China, alongside our Ambassadors, we have invited our community to join us on the mat, creating space for them to feel the power of the breath, connecting our mind and bodies in one fluid motion in our practice. This year, returning to Beijing again, we are deeply honoured to unroll our mats on the Great Wall, arguably China’s most beloved and culturally significant landmarks, not to mention one of the seven wonders of the world," said Lynn Cheah, senior vice president of brand marketing, lululemon China.
"With thousands in attendance, today was not only a celebration of a decade-long dream, fulfilled, it is also a powerful reminder that the practice of yoga continues to endure in our communities. We are all connected in movement, with every inhale and exhale, our feet rooted to the ground, and our outstretched arms reaching for the sky," added Cheah.
Brand ambassador Yilong Zhu reflected on the unique nature of the practice: “Practicing together here on the Great Wall has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Yoga is accessible - it requires nothing more than a mat and a willingness to begin. It helps me reconnect with my body and mind while supporting my overall wellbeing.”
The Beijing event marks the start of a nationwide tour, with lululemon's yoga festival slated to continue at iconic landmarks across Shanghai, Xi’an, Shenyang, and Chongqing.
Expanding its reach beyond the mat, the brand will also launch its first-ever video podcast series, Conversations on the Mat, on 8 June. The series will feature Zhu alongside figure skater Yi Zhu and former table tennis star Jianfeng Niu to discuss breathwork, mental health, and holistic wellbeing.
