HK tourism chief proposes integration of Cantopop into kung fu

Hong Kong's tourism chief has suggested incorporating Cantopop elements into local martial arts, drawing inspiration from South Korea's blend of Taekwondo and K-pop.

This comes after Rosanna Law, the secretary for culture, sports and tourism, attended the inaugural Korean Consul General Cup Taekwondo Championship (韓國總領事盃跆拳道大賽) on Monday (7 October), which marked the kickoff for the 15th edition of Festive Korea (韓國十月文化節).

As part of the competition, 442 athletes took part, with a significant number being teenagers and children. Before the matches, the South Korean national Taekwondo team put on a performance that included board-breaking and sparring, while also integrating traditional Taekwondo with K-pop trends.

In her Facebook post, Law said she was impressed by the incorporation of K-op elements into the performances by the Korean national team. She suggested that Hong Kong adopt this creative approach by blending Cantopop with martial arts showcases.

Law also highlighted that Festive Korea aligns with Hong Kong Week 2025@Seoul, a lively exhibition of Hong Kong's vibrant arts scene that promotes cultural exchange and strengthens the bond between the two regions.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong government has been implementing initiatives to connect with APAC travellers, including those from South Korea. In February, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) launched a running-themed tour designed for South Korean visitors, allowing them to experience the city's urban and natural landscapes, which attracted more than 140 participants from South Korea.

Also known as "Hong Kong Outdoor Festival”, the event followed last year’s inaugural "HK Great Outdoors Festival", which featured various sports activities such as yoga, night running and hiking. HKTB South Korea director Kim Yoon-ho cited it as evidence of the strong appeal of green tourism and outdoor sports-focused vacations among South Korean travellers.
