The Financial Times (FT) has appointed Leo Lewis (pictured) as its new Tokyo bureau chief, effective immediately. He succeeds Kana Inagaki.

Reporting to the FT’s Asia editor Robin Harding, Lewis will lead the editorial team based in Tokyo, and continue to provide coverage on the most important stories from Japan.

Lewis was previously Asia business editor, writing a popular weekly column. Over many years in Tokyo he has been a documenter of corporate Japan during times of significant change and upheaval, according to the release.

Lewis is an experienced journalist with over 20 years of experience covering business and finance in Asia.

FT Asia editor Robin Harding said: “Lewis is a highly accomplished journalist with a deep understanding of corporate Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. His appointment underscores our commitment to providing our readers with the most original, valuable and entertaining coverage of an eternally fascinating country."

Lewis said: "I am delighted to be the next Tokyo bureau chief and leading a fresh new team at a particularly fascinating time. Japan remains a key player in the global economy, is of huge interest to investors and is becoming increasingly important in geopolitical influence.”

Back in April, FT entered into a strategic partnership and licensing agreement with ChatGPT developer OpenAI.

The partnership aims to enhance ChatGPT's features with attributed content from the FT, help improve its models’ usefulness by incorporating the FT's quality journalism, and collaborate on developing new AI products and features for FT readers. Additionally, ChatGPT users will be able to see select content from the FT in response to relevant queries.

ChatGPT, a generative AI platform, uses information and text from data across the internet, to produce text, image, or audio, from basic hand-typed inputs.
