Duolingo's mascot joins Meituan as delivery rider

Language-learning platform Duolingo's mascot Duo (多儿) has publicly "resigned" from its role and joined Meituan as its delivery rider, as part of the partnership between two brands.

The campaign began earlier this month when Duo shared a tongue-in-cheek resignation letter on its official social media account. The account was promptly renamed "Duo (resigned version)", setting the stage for a week of playful storytelling.

In the letter, Duo wrote: "Thank you to the company for its trust and cultivation. Though I was the one who gave more, and you all learned so much from me. Having me at the company is your honour."

She continued: "Now that my wings have stiffened, after careful consideration, I have decided to step down from my role as the company's mascot."

The post has gained over 63,000 likes and 12,000 comments so far, according to checks by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE. The comment section soon became a gathering point for major Chinese brands, including Alipay, JD Super, KFC and Tmall, all vying to offer Duo a new role.

The narrative took its next turn when Duo accepted an offer from Meituan, rebranding the account to "Duoer (rider version)" and announcing a new vocation, delivery rider, complete with the brand's signature yellow uniform.

At the heart of the partnership lies a tagline that bridges both brands' value propositions: "If you have time to order food, you have time to check in" (有时间点外卖,就有时间打卡) The messaging reinforces the idea that the interval between placing a delivery order and its arrival offers a natural opportunity for a Duolingo lesson.

As part of the collaboration, the brands have launched a range of activities to offer Duolingo-themed gifts, including keychains, candles, stickers, tissue box covers and more. These items arrive alongside actual delivery orders, serving as playful reminders to keep up with language practice.

In select partner restaurants, certain meal sets feature a green accessory on their thumbnails, marked with a "gift" icon, signalling the inclusion of gifts. Meanwhile, there is card-collecting campaign, with three cards redeemable for gifts.

To generate further buzz, Duolingo announced that by 8pm on 23 March, the three most-liked comments on its WeChat post would receive a custom mystery gift box co-created with Meituan.
