Disney+ makes its pitch for Australian ad dollars as sport joins the streaming fight

Six months after switching on advertising in Australia, Disney is moving quickly to convince media buyers its streaming service can offer considerably more than another 30-second spot.
At its 2026 ANZ Upfront in Melbourne, the entertainment giant pitched Disney+ as a single advertising ecosystem spanning some of the world's biggest entertainment franchises, live ESPN sport, first-party audience data and a growing suite of interactive ad products.
The presentation marks the next phase of Disney's push into Australia's increasingly crowded streaming advertising market, following the launch of its $9.99 Standard with Ads tier in April.
Disney+ now brings Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Hulu and ESPN under the same streaming roof, giving advertisers access to entertainment and increasingly important live sporting audiences through a single buy.
Globally, Disney+ with Ads now operates in more than two dozen countries, works with more than 10,000 advertisers and runs on a unified global advertising technology stack, according to Disney.
“What stood out was the breadth of the offering," said Tom Carlon, head of investment at Initiative.
"From premium drama and blockbuster franchises through to ESPN's growing sports proposition, Disney is clearly looking to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive streaming market."

Across its Australia and New Zealand operations, Disney is now bringing more of that global advertising machinery into the market.
Disney Audience Graph will combine signals across the company's platforms to build a deeper picture of audiences, while Disney Select will turn those insights into curated audience segments designed to move advertisers beyond broad demographic targeting.
New creative formats are also coming.
Ad Selector will allow viewers to choose which advertising creative they see before programming begins, while Video+ will allow viewers to send an advertiser's offer directly to their phone without interrupting what they are watching.
Further down the track, Disney Ad Creative Studio will give advertisers tools to produce tailored creative assets more quickly and at greater scale.
Dana McGraw, a senior Disney Advertising executive in the US, said the company was focused on giving advertisers more sophisticated ways to use its streaming environment.
“Our focus is to give advertisers richer insights, stronger tools and more meaningful ways to show up in premium streaming moments,” McGraw said.
Sport enters the equation
Held on the evening of the inaugural NFL Melbourne game, the other increasingly important piece of Disney's Australian advertising proposition is ESPN.
Its integration into Disney+ gives the streaming service appointment viewing alongside its entertainment catalogue, with NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB joined by the NBL, WNBL, WNBA and FIBA World Cup coverage.
Disney says ESPN will carry at least six live NFL games each week, alongside the company's global broadcast of the 2027 Super Bowl and the historic NFL game in Melbourne.
Its long-term NBA deal also gives ESPN more than eight games each week, along with the All-Star Weekend, playoffs and NBA Finals.
The emphasis on sport comes as Australia's streaming market increasingly becomes a battleground not simply for subscribers, but advertising dollars.
“What stood out was the breadth of the offering. From premium drama and blockbuster franchises through to ESPN's growing sports proposition, Disney is clearly looking to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive streaming market," Carlon added.
"In a sea of content from a variety of streaming partners this upfront season, there's a clear content diversity opportunity to play into across drama, sport and local investment. The audience will be there, and the ad units are top tier."
Nine is using the Premier League to drive Stan Sport subscriptions and this week extended its rights through to 2034, while DAZN is overhauling Foxtel's advertising operation and putting Kayo at the centre of its Australian sports strategy.
Disney's proposition is different again: use the combination of major entertainment franchises, fandom and ESPN's live sport to create a stream of high-attention moments throughout the year.
Kylie Watson-Wheeler, senior vice president and managing director of The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand and head of ESPN Asia-Pacific, said that combination differentiated Disney in the advertising market.
“Few companies bring storytelling, technology and fandom together the way Disney can,” Watson-Wheeler said.
“That makes Disney+ an unmatched launchpad for advertisers seeking cultural impact in premium, trusted environments.”
Disney also used its upfront to showcase its upcoming entertainment slate, including Count My Lies, The Spot, season three of Paradise, Only Murders in London, Marvel's VisionQuest, season two of Ahsoka, season two of Alien: Earth and season three of Australian original The Artful Dodger.
Nik Weber, director of Disney Advertising Australia and New Zealand, said the relatively recent arrival of the ad tier locally belied the maturity of the technology behind it.
“The Disney+ ad tier may be new, but the technology, products and experience behind it are not,” Weber said. “That is what allows us to move at speed and give advertisers more ways to reach audiences across premium entertainment, live sport and culturally significant moments.”
For Initiative’s Tom Carlon, the true test will be how the results stack up against competitors.
“The combination of premium content, premium ad experiences and growing audience capabilities creates a compelling proposition for advertisers,” he said.
“While some of the ad formats showcased aren't entirely new to market, Disney's advantage is its ability to combine those capabilities with premium content and highly engaged audiences.”
