The Devil Wears Prada 2 has delivered the biggest opening weekend at the Australian box office in the past year, pulling in $13.1 million across its Wednesday to Sunday debut.

The sequel to the 2006 original also ranks as the second biggest comedy opening of all time locally, behind Barbie, underlining the continued strength of nostalgia-driven releases in cinemas.

The film recorded 547,000 admissions over its opening window, with strong demand for premium cinema formats contributing to the result.

Audience data shows the film resonated particularly strongly with the hard-to-reach P25–54 demographic, which accounted for 62% of viewers, alongside a 69% female skew.

The result adds to a broader recovery trend for the cinema sector, which has recorded multiple strong openings in recent months and its strongest Easter period since 2019.

Overall admissions are now up 13% year-on-year, with growth recorded across key audience segments including younger viewers, families and culturally diverse audiences.

Val Morgan Cinema managing director Guy Burbidge said the performance highlights the continued role of cinema as a cultural and commercial platform for brands.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2 is another huge cultural moment – a great example of how nostalgic, quality content pulls in the big audiences,” he said.

“We’ve seen a run of record-breaking openings, the strongest Easter period in six years, and now continued growth across both box office and admissions year-on-year.”
