Cyberport and Prudential launch Cantonese voice AI challenge

Cyberport and Prudential Hong Kong have launched the Cantonese voice AI challenge, a joint initiative designed to source and develop high-impact, practical AI solutions for the insurance sector.
Announced at the Insurance Authority of Hong Kong’s AI Cohort Symposium, the competition stems from a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Cyberport and Prudential in December 2025. The challenge directly aligns with the Insurance Authority’s broader AI Cohort Programme, reflecting a shared ecosystem commitment to positioning Hong Kong as a premier hub for artificial intelligence innovation.
The initiative marks the latest expansion of Prudential's ongoing investment in scalable AI infrastructure. The insurer is currently reviewing its end-to-end customer value chain to implement targeted use cases across risk management, health services, and call center operations, with a focus on enhancing fraud resilience, streamlining claims processing, and deploying advanced voice agents for faster customer service resolution.
Prudential is actively testing these applications under the Insurance Authority’s GenAI Sandbox++ programme, ensuring that the responsible deployment of automated tech translates into trusted customer experiences at scale.
The competition is structured as a three-stage challenge that culminates in a live finale. Submissions from participants, ranging from independent developers and startups to enterprise tech providers and academic labs, will be rigorously benchmarked across four core engineering pillars.
These include automatic speech recognition to accurately capture localized Cantonese slang, large language models for contextual understanding of complex insurance terminology, text-to-speech engine capability for generating natural verbal responses, and the overall end-to-end user experience regarding latency and accuracy. The application window is set to open later this summer, with full participation and submission details being made available via Cyberport’s official social media channels in August 2026.
Eric Chan, chief public mission officer of Cyberport, said, “As Hong Kong’s digital tech hub and AI accelerator, Cyberport is committed to accelerating Hong Kong’s development as an international I&T hub by fostering cross-sector collaboration and driving real-world AI adoption. Building on the Insurance Authority’s AI Cohort Programme and our strategic partnership with Prudential, the challenge demonstrates how regulators, industry leaders and innovators can transform AI vision into practical applications that enhance customer service excellence for the insurance sector."
"As home to Hong Kong’s largest fintech community of over 400 fintech start-ups, Cyberport continues to connect insurers, AI innovators and technology talent to drive InsurTech innovation across the insurance and wider financial services sectors. By leveraging Cyberport’s AI ecosystem, industry network and infrastructure, we aim to advance Cantonese AI capabilities, nurture local talent, and further strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading international FinTech hub and financial centre," he added.
Alex Wong, regional chief information technology officer (CITO) for Greater China, Prudential, and CITO for Hong Kong and Macau, Prudential Hong Kong, remarked: “The next phase of AI in insurance will be defined not by technical capability alone, but by its relevance to customers and readiness for scale. By advancing Cantonese Voice AI that is relevant and fit for practical application, and by nurturing the talent required to scale these capabilities, we aim to contribute to the long‑term advancement of Hong Kong’s insurance ecosystem. Our collaboration with Cyberport represents an important step in moving AI from vision to meaningful impact, one that requires shared standards and real‑world use cases.”
