Chupa Chups expands beyond lollipops as it eyes $831m growth category

Chupa Chups is making its first major move beyond lollipops in Australia, launching a new range of lollies as part of a broader global repositioning that aims to transform the iconic brand into a bigger player across confectionery.

The expansion sees Chupa Chups enter Australia's $831 million lollies category, which grew 12.5% in value over the past year, outpacing total confectionery growth of 10.6%, according to Circana.

For Amelia Goldsmith, brand manager for Australia and New Zealand, the move represents far more than a line extension.

"This is our first major, dedicated entry into the lollies category in Australia. It is a significant move for the brand," Goldsmith told this publication.

"Lollipops will always be at the heart of Chupa Chups, but this gives us the opportunity to bring the same colour, playfulness and sense of fun into a much larger part of the confectionery aisle and introduce the brand to new occasions and consumers."

While the Australian launch marks a local first, Goldsmith said it forms part of a much broader shift taking place across the Chupa Chups brand globally.

"Lollies already form a significant part of the Chupa Chups portfolio in other regions, so this launch is part of a broader evolution of the brand globally," she said.

"The Australian range and launch strategy have been developed specifically for this market, based on local category opportunities, consumer insights and retailer needs."

Those local insights shaped the launch of Sour Bites, Ocean Fun, Puffies and Sweet 'n Sour Filled Bites, with the products selected to establish the brand's credibility in Australia's highly competitive lollies aisle.

The timing, she said, was driven as much by changing consumer behaviour as category growth.

"The lollies category is large, widely purchased and continuing to grow," Goldsmith said. "We are also seeing strong consumer interest in products that offer more than just flavour – different textures, playful shapes and interactive ways to eat and share."

"That aligns naturally with Chupa Chups. Our research also highlighted the importance of shared moments of fun and connection in everyday family life, which became the foundation for both the range and the Free the Funshine campaign."

Rather than replacing its core identity, Goldsmith said the expansion allows Chupa Chups to participate in occasions where lollipops have traditionally played a smaller role.

"Lollipops remain central to Chupa Chups and continue to offer a distinctive consumption occasion," she said.

"The new range allows us to participate in additional occasions, particularly sharing and family moments, while retaining the brand's core identity."

The launch has been 18 months in the making, spanning category analysis, product selection, manufacturing, retailer planning and development of the integrated Free the Funshine campaign.

Looking ahead, Goldsmith said the new range represents the beginning rather than the end of Chupa Chups' ambitions in the category.

"We see lollies as a long-term growth platform for Chupa Chups in Australia, and we already have some exciting innovation in development," she said.

"We'll continue to build the range with products that bring something genuinely distinctive, playful and fun to the category."

Supporting the launch is the Free the Funshine campaign, created by The Idea Shed and Havas Media Australia. Running across audio, video, out-of-home, retail, digital and social channels, the campaign is designed to establish Chupa Chups' credentials in a category where the brand has traditionally had little presence.
