The Australian has launched The Gangster’s Ghost, a new true crime podcast exploring the life and mysterious death of Stewart John Regan, a notorious Sydney gangster murdered in 1974.
Over 10 episodes, award-winning journalist and podcaster Matt Condon teams up with former police officer and Regan’s cousin, Kelly Slater Regan, to investigate a crime that has haunted her family for five decades. Using AI-generated voice technology based on archival recordings, Regan himself narrates parts of the story from beyond the grave.
“The Gangster's Ghost is a gripping investigative podcast that takes our audio storytelling to a new level,” said Michelle Gunn, editor-in-chief of The Australian. “By using our audio expertise to recreate Regan's voice from archival recordings, listeners are able to hear directly from the key figure in this 50-year-old mystery.”
Condon said the podcast began after Slater Regan approached him five years ago, asking for help to uncover the truth behind her cousin’s criminal life and unsolved murder.
“They were prepared for the worst – what if he was an even bigger monster than they'd imagined?” Condon said. “We unearth details about Regan's life that have never been revealed, and his family talks for the first time. His death is still an active cold case.”
The podcast is executive produced by Editorial Director Claire Harvey and produced by multimedia editor Lia Tsamoglou. It will be accompanied by editorial and video coverage on The Australian’s platforms, with episodes made available first to subscribers.
