Queensland Police look to gaming to boost Gen Z ranks

Two of Australia’s biggest gaming creators are teaming up with Queensland Police to inspire the next wave of recruits, taking gaming skills like strategy and teamwork into real-world policing.

The Queensland Police Service partnered with EssenceMediacom, WPP Media’s Sport and Entertainment division and gaming specialist Livewire to build an influencer-led campaign aimed at 18 to 35-year-olds.

The idea is simple: meet young Australians where they already are and show how policing translates into the skills and behaviours they use every day online.

Gaming creators Vindooly and Berticuss, who command millions of followers across TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, stepped out from behind their screens to spend time with frontline officers. Their content shows how quick decision-making, coordination and problem-solving in gaming mirror real policing scenarios, giving their audiences a first-hand look at a career many may not have considered.

The work builds on QPS's “What will you stand for?” platform, which has already generated more than 300 eligible applications since launching its first phase. A second phase is underway, with Queensland Police officers set to take on the creators in a live-streamed gaming battle in November.

Queensland Police commissioner Steve Gollschewski said policing is about more than just enforcing the law.

“It’s about protecting the vulnerable, solving complex problems and serving the community with integrity, respect and courage,” he said.

“Our Service thrives on diversity. The broader the range of backgrounds, experiences and skillsets our officers bring, the greater the impact we can make. That’s why it’s essential for us to engage with diverse audiences who may be inspired to join us and contribute to the safety and wellbeing of Queenslanders.”
