OpenAI reportedly plans ChatGPT ‘superapp’ overhaul

OpenAI is reportedly preparing its biggest overhaul of ChatGPT to date, with plans to transform the platform into a “superapp” that integrates coding tools, AI agents and third-party services, according to a Financial Times report.
The move would push ChatGPT beyond a standalone chatbot into a unified digital ecosystem. It also comes as competition intensifies in the AI space, particularly with rivals such as Anthropic.
The reported shift reflects a broader industry trend towards “superapps” that consolidate multiple services within a single platform. It mirrors models such as WeChat in China and Grab in Southeast Asia, which expanded from single-use services into multi-functional ecosystems.

According to the Financial Times, the overhaul could also give greater prominence to OpenAI’s coding product Codex, alongside a redesigned interface that surfaces image generation, coding tools and partner integrations such as Canva and Booking.com. The changes are expected to roll out in the coming weeks across web and mobile.
In conversation with MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, an OpenAI spokesperson said the direction is not new and forms part of a broader roadmap the company has been “building in the open”. The company announced plans last week to bring Codex into ChatGPT in the coming weeks, with further details also discussed by OpenAI executives in recent podcast appearances.
The company added that its plans for a unified “superapp” were first outlined in March alongside its fundraising announcement, with additional commentary shared by product leadership at the time. The spokesperson said the goal is to extend Codex capabilities to nearly one billion ChatGPT users globally.
The redesign builds on OpenAI’s wider push to position ChatGPT as a persistent digital assistant. Last year, it launched ChatGPT Atlas, a browser built around the chatbot, introducing memory and agent features that allow it to retain context and complete tasks such as research and scheduling on behalf of users.
The move also comes as OpenAI explores potential advertising models. While the company has not introduced ads within ChatGPT, the AI-giant is exploring advertising to keep its low-cost subscription tier, ChatGPT Go, affordable.
