Ocean Park alters Halloween display amid concerns over murder case

Ocean Park has modified a controversial Halloween display following public concerns over its possible association with the Abby Choi Tin Fung murder case.

This comes after a media preview held last Friday (26 September) for the upcoming annual Ocean Park Halloween Fest, which will feature the haunted house "The unsolved terrors” (港詭奇案).

The storyline during the preview revolved around an inheritance dispute and included a display of green radish and carrot soup, where actors lifted a cooking pot to reveal a fake human head, asking, “Would you like some carrot soup?” according to local media reports such as HK01 and The Standard

The key elements of the storyline are linked to the Choi case in 2023, which shocked the city at the time. She was murdered that year, and her skull along with several ribs was later discovered in a large soup pot. Her ex-husband, along with his older brother and father, has been charged with murder and is currently awaiting a High Court trial.

In response, Ocean Park’s chairman, Paulo Pong, told a Commercial Radio programme the park takes public feedback very seriously, saying it promptly changed the relevant designs.

Pong said the initial internal review process had been scheduled for Wednesday (24 September), but was cancelled due to Super Typhoon Ragasa, which prevented the team from reviewing the work.

“The incident taught the team a valuable lesson. We hope everyone will give young creatives more opportunities, allowing the team to gain a deeper understanding. While many scenes are creative, it's important to consider various factors as well,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pong did not specify which details had been adjusted, noting that if people find the storyline somewhat familiar in the news, it is purely fictional.

“Our team has made changes regarding the case; characters, events, and items have been modified in hopes that it won’t evoke any real-life cases,” he added.
