NFL’s Australian debut pulls more than 2 million viewers for Seven

The NFL's enormous Australian marketing push appears to have found an audience.

Seven's coverage of the historic San Francisco 49ers taking on Los Angeles Rams at the MCG reached 2.19 million Australians, the network's biggest NFL yet.

The result provides an early indication that the considerable effort to turn the NFL's first Australian regular-season game into something bigger than a one-off sporting fixture translated into mainstream interest.

Melbourne was effectively turned into an NFL playground in the days leading up to the game, with the league and its partners rolling out fan experiences, sponsorship activations and entertainment across the city.

The Rams transformed Crown Melbourne's Riverwalk into Rams House, complete with a 22-yard floating football field on the Yarra, giant screen, branded lowrider, cheerleaders, mariachi band and the Super Bowl LVI trophy.

NFL sold out Melbourne's MCG with 100,021 fans.

Jameson also used the Australian game to launch its new multiyear deal as the NFL's official global spirits sponsor, activating at the NFL Kickoff Festival at Melbourne Park and extending the partnership into ESPN programming.

The scale of the audience gives those investments some immediate context.

The game drew an average national total TV audience of 938,000, while more than 155,000 watched on 7plus Sport alone, a streaming record for an NFL game on the platform.

Interest also extended well beyond kick-off, with Seven’s pre-game coverage reaching 1.21 million and averaging 526,000 viewers, while the post-game reached 1.17 million and averaged 480,000.

The Melbourne game comes amid a much broader international expansion by the NFL, which is playing nine games across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums this season.

Australia is increasingly part of that strategy, with broadcasters, sponsors and the league itself investing in turning American football fandom into a year-round commercial opportunity rather than interest centred solely around the Super Bowl.
