News Corp launches corporate copyright licence as AI raises compliance risk

News Corp Australia has introduced a corporate copyright licence designed to give businesses legal certainty when downloading, sharing or republishing the publisher’s content, including when using articles as prompts in AI tools.

The Corporate Copyright Licence covers internal sharing across teams as well as external use on websites, social channels and client emails. News Corp said the product is aimed at reducing the growing legal and financial exposure organisations face as content-sharing becomes routine and AI accelerates copyright risk.

“Content sharing is second nature in today’s digital workplace,” Nicholas Gray, managing director, tech platform partnerships at News Corp Australia, said. “While people may not realise they may require a licence to copy content, the need for an organisation to de-risk their exposure has never been greater with AI’s growth and the potential it has to supercharge copyright theft.”

The licence also serves a secondary purpose: ensuring the information being redistributed comes from a verified news source at a time of rising misinformation and disinformation. Gray said this adds “invaluable” confidence for businesses relying on trusted content.

“A retailer or manufacturer wouldn’t allow other businesses to steal their output, so why should copyright holders?” he said.

“There is no doubt Australian business wants to do the right thing and it’s up to us to help them do so.”
