Mountain Dew removes keyboard keys in Philippines gaming stunt with BBDO Guerrero

Mountain Dew removes keyboard keys in Philippines gaming stunt with BBDO Guerrero

Mountain Dew has launched a gaming campaign in the Philippines that removes three of the most essential keys from PC gamers’ keyboards, turning the brand’s name into the centrepiece of an experiential challenge.

Developed with BBDO Guerrero, the “Play No Dew” campaign challenged gamers and creators to attempt playing their favourite titles without the D, E, and W keys – letters that form the name Filipino players use for the drink.

The idea draws on the country’s strong gaming culture. According to the brand, 97% of internet users in the Philippines play video games, the highest rate globally. On PC, several key commands – including W, A, S, D, E, and F – are commonly used for movement, interactions and in-game abilities. Removing three of those controls created an immediate gameplay handicap.

To demonstrate the concept, Mountain Dew distributed custom keyboards with the D, E and W keys removed to some of the country’s biggest gaming creators, who then attempted to play live on stream.

Among those taking part were creators including Alodia Gosiengfiao, DocZ Gaming, Cherizawa, KingFB, AmaraTV and Buunja. The streams quickly descended into chaotic gameplay, with characters unable to move properly, attacks misfiring and objectives going unfinished – moments that resonated with audiences watching in real time.

Within two weeks of launch, the livestreams generated more than 44.3 million views across platforms.

The campaign also invited the broader gaming community to participate by disabling the D, E and W keys on their own keyboards and sharing their experiences online using the hashtag #PlayNoDew. Participants could post entries on TikTok, Facebook Reels or Instagram Reels, tagging participating creators for a chance to win prizes including gaming headsets, keyboards and exclusive Mountain Dew merchandise.

The initiative culminated in a live competition held on 27 February, pitting amateur gamers and creators with fully functioning keyboards against professional players attempting to compete without the three keys.

The match featured Team PLAY THE DEW facing Team NO DEW, composed of five members from Team NAOS – an internationally competing eSports squad ranked seventh in the Asia-Pacific region for Valorant.

In a twist that brought the experiment into a competitive setting, the professional players attempted to compete in a full 5v5 match without the D, E and W keys. Despite their skill level, Team PLAY THE DEW ultimately won the match.

Following the online engagement and the live event, the activation is also extending into the physical gaming community. Players can try the challenge themselves at select gaming cafés nationwide, including Kadiliman Café locations in Taft and España, TNC Café Cebu, and NCGC Matina.

“Gaming is one of the fastest-growing passion spaces in the Philippines, and it demands brands that understand the culture. For Mountain Dew, this campaign was about moving beyond visibility, and into participation through authentic gaming insights and behaviour. Play No Dew reflects our bigger ambition to move beyond being a supporter of gaming, become an indispensable part of the experience and create moments that players genuinely want to be part of,” said Nicole Villarojo, marketing director, PepsiCo Philippines Beverages.

“Often, brands are trying to add something on to a game. But with this campaign we were able to make an impact by taking something away. Because, as all PC gamers know, you can’t win without the D, E, and W keys. Which is the strongest proof yet that when there’s no Dew, it’s no contest,” David Guerrero, creative chairman of BBDO Guerrero, added.

From livestream challenges to café activations and a packed live showdown, the campaign highlights how brands are increasingly experimenting with participatory gaming formats to engage communities beyond traditional sponsorships.
