Merdeka 118 Precinct appoints integrated communications partner

Merdeka 118 Precinct has appointed M+C Saatchi KARSA as its integrated communications partner, following a competitive pitch.

Effective April 2026, the appointment covers the precinct and its portfolio of destinations, including 118 Mall, The View at 118, Merdeka Textile Museum and Look at 118.

Under the partnership, M+C Saatchi KARSA will support Merdeka 118 Precinct as it looks to build awareness and affinity among local and international audiences, while strengthening its positioning as a destination within Kuala Lumpur.

The appointment comes as Merdeka 118 Precinct continues to expand its offerings. Located on historically significant ground where Malaysia's independence was declared, the precinct is being positioned as a space for Malaysians and visitors to gather, connect and discover the country's culture and history.

To kick off the partnership, the agency rolled out a brand film centred on the precinct and its connection to Malaysia's past and future. The film premiered on 11 August at 11.08am, in a nod to the number 118, and is running across Merdeka 118 Precinct's social platforms.

It will be followed by Gapai, a Merdeka festive film that draws inspiration from Tunku Abdul Rahman's raised hand during the declaration of independence. The gesture is reinterpreted as one of reaching forward together, representing hope, unity, resilience and progress.

"Merdeka 118 is where it all began. It is a place deeply rooted in our nation's history, but it is also where we believe the future will converge. Our vision is
simple: to make Merdeka 118 a destination that brings people, communities and culture together," said Lara Hussein, founding partner and CEO of M+C Saatchi KARSA.

She added, "This win is especially meaningful for us at KARSA — being part of a project of such national significance feels incredibly special, both personally and professionally. Few projects carry this kind of weight, and we don't take that responsibility lightly."

The account win follows M+C Saatchi Malaysia's recent rebrand to M+C Saatchi KARSA. The name KARSA is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning "creative will" or "conscious intent", reflecting the agency's positioning around purpose-led creativity. The Merdeka 118 appointment adds to the agency's momentum following the rebrand, bringing its integrated communications capabilities to one of Malaysia's most prominent destinations.

The appointment also comes amid renewed attention around the Merdeka 118 development and its identity. In July, Maybank officially renamed the landmark Menara Merdeka Maybank, nearly a year after the installation of its logo atop the tower sparked widespread debate online.
