Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has unveiled a new esports experience zone in the departures hall of Terminal 1, designed to energise the passenger journey with interactive gameplay and a vibrant atmosphere.

Located near gate 11, the esports experience zone spans over 1,000 square feet and features eight sports-themed interactive games, including racing, e-sailing, e-cycling, e-tennis, skiing, fencing, and two reaction-based challenge games.

The facility is designed to cater to both departing and transfer passengers, offering a dynamic way to unwind and stay engaged during their time at the airport. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm, with all activities available free of charge.

Airport Authority acting chief executive Steven Yiu said the esports experience zone offers activities suitable for both the young and the young-at-heart, according to Ming Pao and The Standard. This initiative is in line with HKIA's ongoing dedication to passenger experience.

Recognising that many families are planning summer holidays, the airport has curated a diverse lineup of activities spanning both dynamic and leisurely offerings, designed to enrich the travel experience for passengers across all age groups.

Among the more exhilarating options are e-skiing and racing, while more relaxed choices include rhythm-based reaction games that help sharpen reflexes, Yiu said. Passenger response to the esports experience zone has been positive, with approximately 3,000 passenger visits recorded in the first three days of operation, according to the reports. The facility is currently planned to remain open for one year.

Yiu also revealed that the airport will launch an arts and culture festival next month, with further details to be announced in due course. The passenger traffic at the airport over the past six months had risen by 11% compared with the same period last year, according to the reports. To cope with the peak summer travel season, some check-in and security screening processes have been redirected to Terminal 2, which is now handling an average of approximately 20,000 passengers per day.

Back in May, HKIA stepped up its push to attract talent ahead of the opening of Terminal 2, rolling out a content-led campaign with local creator group Pomato (小薯茄).

The campaign was developed in collaboration with WPP Media Hong Kong and The Goat Agency, who worked alongside HKIA and Pomato on the execution. It was part of a wider effort to build awareness ahead of the HKIA Expo and Career Fair, taking place from 23 to 24 May at Terminal 2's arrival hall.
