Havas Red's Stuart Hood goes independent with new digital advisory Unbriefed

Former Havas Red executive Stuart Hood has launched Unbriefed, a Sydney-based digital advisory, after four years leading the agency's social and content business.

Hood, who served as executive director, social and content at Havas Red Australia from October 2022, has established the independent venture to help brands close the gap between digital's potential and its application, arguing that businesses risk overlooking fundamental marketing principles amid the rush to adopt AI.

Unbriefed launches with the positioning "Built to be found, Made to be remembered" and a founding client roster spanning technology, professional development, health and other sectors.

The venture marks a new chapter for Hood, who has spent 21 years working across digital and content strategy for global brands and agencies.

"We are in one of the most powerful periods of digital opportunity for brands. But it is almost as if great digital principles have been replaced by the belief that AI will do it for us, and that is a mistake," Hood said.

"The complexity of the digital environment is making it harder for businesses to identify where to focus. Most brands aren't failing at digital, they're simply not getting everything they could from it."

Hood said the proliferation of digital channels, tools and technologies had made it increasingly difficult for businesses to identify where to direct their investment and resources.

"The fundamentals, the things that actually move the needle, are being overlooked. Not because people don't care, but because there has never been a clear enough signal on where to focus first. That is the gap Unbriefed exists to close."

Unlike a traditional agency, Unbriefed operates as a senior-led advisory working directly with marketing leaders and founders, combining strategic advice with hands-on execution.

Its services span technology, social, SEO and generative engine optimisation (GEO), data integration and creative content, with a research-first approach designed to help businesses identify opportunities before committing marketing spend.

The Unbriefed name reflects Hood's view that businesses do not always know how to articulate their digital marketing needs, particularly when they lack a clear understanding of what technology and digital channels can deliver.

"Unbriefed is built to change that - starting with clarity before strategy, and strategy before spend," Hood said.

The business launches with five named founding clients, including leadership development business Conversation Kits, Crunchr, Dr Kelsey Burton, New Zealand-based Egmont Diesel Services and Kyora Landscapes.

Conversation Kits founder Jessica Peoples said the decision to engage Unbriefed was driven by a need for strategic direction and execution, rather than another external strategy document.

"What I needed was someone who could be honest with me and show me exactly where to focus my digital investment, not a strategy document that sits still, but someone who actually executes alongside me," Peoples said.

"Working with Unbriefed has given me both clarity and confidence to back my digital spend and implement bold digital principles that would have taken me much longer to put in place."

The launch comes as agencies and independent consultancies increasingly grapple with how AI is changing the economics of digital marketing, from content production and search visibility to the way brands connect with customers.

Hood said the opportunity lies in helping businesses understand where technology can deliver meaningful results without losing sight of the human behaviour driving those decisions.

"Our mission is simple - get brands found and remembered," he said.
