GCash expands payment options with direct Visa and Mastercard card linking

GCash is introducing a new payment feature that will allow users to link their Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards directly to the app, enabling purchases even when their wallet balance is insufficient or empty.

The feature, which is scheduled to roll out nationwide, removes the need for users to manually cash in before completing transactions. Instead, eligible purchases can be funded instantly through a linked payment card, expanding the payment options available within the digital wallet.

Users will be able to link up to three Visa or Mastercard credit or debit cards to a single GCash account, designate a default card for payments, and manage or remove linked cards directly through the app.

The update is designed to make in-store transactions more seamless while supporting cashless payments by allowing users to pay through GCash even if they have no wallet balance available at the time of purchase.

The company said card linking will be protected through one-time password (OTP) verification, while eligible transactions will also be authenticated using biometrics or a phone PIN where supported.

"Our commitment to innovation means building solutions that make daily payments simpler, safer, and completely effortless. We are thrilled to soon allow GCash users to link their Visa or Mastercard directly for payments. As we prepare to roll out this feature, we remain committed to giving Filipinos the freedom to pay their way with ultimate convenience and total peace of mind," said Ren-ren Reyes, president and CEO of G-Xchange, the mobile wallet operator of GCash.

The launch reflects the growing convergence between digital wallets and traditional card networks as fintech platforms seek to reduce payment friction and offer consumers greater flexibility at checkout. By allowing card-backed payments directly within the app, GCash is expanding its role beyond a stored-value wallet into a broader payment platform that accommodates multiple funding sources.

GCash said the feature will become available to users nationwide within August.
